Heaptalk, Jakarta — A beverage company part of the Heineken, Multi Bintang Indonesia (MBI), in collaboration with the Net Zero Hub of the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Kadin) and World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia organized the Cut the Tosh Collaboration Summit on October 18—19, 2022 taking place on Thamrin Nine Ballroom, Central Jakarta.
The summit is part of the Cut the Tosh movement which was launched in May 2022 with the aim of turning narratives into actions that have a real impact in achieving emission reduction targets through multiple sustainability initiatives.
Cut the Tosh Collaboration Summit is expected to become a connecting platform in the sustainability journey of stakeholders for many critical ideas in the field of sustainability. Participants are facilitated to exchange knowledge and network with various organizations with sustainability experts, technology providers, and the right funding. In the end, the forum aims to encourage as much organic collaboration as possible to drive sustainable development efforts.
The event also facilitated the collaboration of numerous stakeholders to support the government’s agenda at the G20 Summit namely green economy and energy transition. In the opening ceremony, two options for the provision of renewable energy were introduced, including through the Cirata Floating Solar Power Plant (PLTS) owned by the State Electricity Company (PLN) and the utilization of biomass facilities in the production process, respectively to replace fossil energy sources and coal.
President Director for Multi Bintang Indonesia René Sánchez Valle delivered, “Our beverage products always play a role in bringing each other closer together and uniting differences. Likewise, through the Cut the Tosh Collaboration Summit we want to be a liaison and ecosystem driver that allows movers and shakers in the sustainability sector to come together and discuss progressive ideas on sustainability initiatives.”
Further, René said that MBI works with all parties to support Indonesia’s agenda in the G20 Presidency, particularly in accelerating the transition to a green economy and renewable energy. This involvement is essential to accelerate our common goal of achieving net zero emissions by 2060.
The provision of renewable energy options is urgently needed to help achieve the Indonesian government’s 2060 Net Zero Emissions agenda. Despite many ways to enhance renewable energy supply options, the transition faces numerous challenges, including limited access and high investment costs.
The Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita conveyed, “Expanding the provision of renewable energy options is key to accelerating the achievement of Indonesia’s net zero emission targets. We appreciate the proactive role of the industry in using this renewable energy in its operations. The industry contributes greatly to reducing carbon emissions and at the same time increasing the green industry-based economy.”
Through the event, Multi Bintang Indonesia as a corporate buyer is exploring cooperation with PLN to replace their electrical energy source with energy sourced from the Cirata Floating PLTS. Director of Retail and Commerce of PLN Edi Srimulyanti said, “Today we will expand PLN’s programs, namely green energy as a service, in collaboration with MBI. Later, we will supply 100% new renewable energy for MBI. Currently, the floating solar power plant in Cirata is still under construction. The first quarter of next year is expected to be the commercial operation date (COD).”
Following the new renewable energy supply, PLN also provides renewable energy certificates (RECs) to investors or customers, declaring that the energy sources that we supply to them are sourced from clean energy. Partnering with APX, PLN has registered 3 terawatt hours (TWh) and distributed them to 233 corporate buyers valued 1TWh. Edi mentioned several corporate buyers that have utilized the new renewable buyers and received REC, spanning Nike, H&M, Toyota, Uniqlo, HM Sampoerna, and many more.
In addition to providing electricity from the Cirata PLTS, Multi Bintang Indonesia has also operated a biomass facility in one of its factories since 2019 as a renewable energy source for thermal energy. Collaborating with Berkeley Energy Commercial Industrial Solutions (BECIS), MBI plans to launch its second biomass facility in 2022, which will increase its total use of renewable energy to 64%. Biomass utilization by Multi Bintang Indonesia as an environmentally friendly energy source to replace heat energy is one of the real actions that other companies can follow.
Cut the Tosh Collaboration Summit is expected to encourage collaboration among stakeholders to turn narratives into action in achieving Indonesia’s 2060 Net Zero Emissions. Besides discussions on options for providing renewable energy, the event presents other extensive agendas in the two-day meeting, including an open program integrated water security led by GWP, a demo of the climate innovational league led by Ecoxyztem, mutual aspirations of energy transition pioneered by CEIA, and initial launch of Net Zero Hub by Kadin.
