Instagram‘s new text-based conversation app is apparently codenamed P92 or Barcelona, that will be launched officially in June this year.
Heaptalk, Jakarta — Meta subsidiary, Instagram, plans to unveil a text-based app that will become a Twitter rival, estimated to debut in June this year.
Based on the company, Meta’s new text-based conversation app is apparently codenamed P92 or Barcelona, which will be created and aligned with Instagram design. Users can sign in with their Instagram username and password, and their followers, handle, and verification will transfer over from the primary application.
Instagram’s plan to combat Twitter is uncovered by influencer marketing and social media marketing teacher at the University of California, Lia Haberman. According to her, although the text-based application is built on top of Instagram, this application is set to be a decentralized and will function as a separate platform. Also, this platform will be compatible with other decentralized social media applications, such as Mastodon, enabling users to reach more audiences.
According to the LA Times report, currently, Meta is testing the project with celebrities and influencers. The report also claims the new app has been quietly available for months. Users can interact with others in various services without switching between applications constantly. The report indicates that caption updates will be limited to 500 characters, less than Instagram captions, but still, plenty to make a comment.
The app allows users to attach links, photos, and videos of up to five minutes, shorter than the two-hour video-sharing feature Twitter recently launched. While the application rivaling Twitter function independently of Instagram, creator controls and account safety features, including blocked accounts and keywords, will be carried out over the new app.
If the app is launched widely, Instagram is forecasted it will be more popular than it already is. As it is known, Meta had confirmed plans to develop a standalone decentralized social network in March.
As stated by Meta’s spokesperson, “We are exploring a standalone decentralized social network for sharing text updates. we believe there is an opportunity for a separate space where creature and public figures can share timely updates about their interests,”
