Heaptalk, Jakarta — Deputy Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Nezar Patria emphasized the importance of reliable telecommunications infrastructure in facilitating the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. According to him, the reliability of telecommunications infrastructure is a fundamental aspect of adapting to AI advancements.
Deputy Minister Nezar Patria explained that the big data used by artificial intelligence as a data source is collected from various places and transmitted through digital infrastructure. “The first move we need to prepare is the reliability of our infrastructure. This is fundamental to adopting AI developments. Big data can only be collected if possessing connectivity,” he stated.
He cited that AI technology holds tremendous potential for assisting human tasks. One example is its ability to act as an intermediary for communication between people speaking different languages. Furthermore, the development of generative AI and social media algorithms has led to increased technology users in recent years.
“It is now becoming a hype because suddenly, this very sophisticated product, generative AI, has penetrated the broader public,” he explained.
Amidst these dynamics, the government has issued a Circular Letter to the Minister of Communication and Information Technology Number 9 of 2023 on AI Ethics as an initial step to regulate its use in Indonesia. According to Deputy Minister Nezar Patria, this technology regulation is further being discussed. Deputy Minister Nezar Patria emphasized that artificial intelligence technology is one of the advanced technologies Indonesia must adopt to achieve digital transformation successfully.
“This is still being discussed, whether we will issue a ministerial regulation, a presidential regulation, or perhaps propose the formation of a law for this technology development,” he said.
