Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) has threatened to block the live streaming platform Bigo Live for ignoring warnings issued by the ministry.
“At the first warning, they said they would improve but didn’t. After the second and third warnings, I think it’s time for the game to end. Just wait,” asserted Communication and Informatics Minister Budi Arie Setiadi.
In response to this threat, Bigo Live met with Minister Budi at his office on Tuesday (09/17). The meeting also discussed plans to enhance content security with a three-phase system in Indonesia. A representative from the platform stated that the Minister welcomed their efforts to improve content security and expressed satisfaction with the initiatives undertaken.
“Budi also emphasized the importance of Bigo Live’s ongoing efforts to create a safer and more friendly cyberspace in Indonesia. He hopes Bigo can provide more benefits to the community and set an example for other digital platforms,” the company explained.
The platform under Joyy Inc. has claimed it has already taken additional steps to enhance content moderation and security on its app in Indonesia. In a statement received by detikINET, Bigo Live promised to tighten its content supervision and moderation team to 300 members.
“We explained our various plans and commitments to Minister Budi. We value our good relationship with the Ministry of Kominfo and will continue to comply with all regulations while ensuring digital safety for Indonesian users,” said Claude Lee, CEO of APAC Joyy Inc., Bigo Live’s parent company.
Lee added, “We have implemented security plans, including enhancing content moderation on Bigo Live. We will also allocate more funds and resources to ensure our services meet the Ministry’s expectations.” In addition, Bigo Live plans to offer programs that support the skill development of the younger generation, including internships and training programs. To support this initiative, Bigo Live will collaborate with several universities in Indonesia.
