Heaptalk, Jakarta — Equinix has expanded its Malaysian data center operations by completing the second phase of its KL1 International Business Exchange (IBX) facility. The KL1 Phase 2 expansion adds 450 cabinets to the KL1 data center, addressing the growing demand for digital infrastructure across Malaysia. Since its launch in 2024, the facility has served diverse local and global customers across industries, including cloud & IT services, digital content & media, enterprises, and network providers.
This expansion, combined with Equinix’s strong presence in Singapore and Johor and its ongoing expansions into Indonesia, the Philippines, and Thailand, will enable businesses to interconnect and exchange data seamlessly across ASEAN. Completing KL1’s second phase is part of Equinix’s long-term investment in supporting Malaysia’s digital growth.
Cheam Tat Inn, Managing Director of Equinix Malaysia, noted that the company has seen strong growth momentum over the past year, with increasing demand from local and international enterprises for its Kuala Lumpur and Johor facilities. “Completing KL1’s second phase within our first year of operations reflects our strong commitment to positioning Malaysia as a strategic hub in the region’s digital economy ecosystem,” said Cheam Tat Inn.
Meeting rising connectivity demands
As more global companies view ASEAN as a key growth market, the region’s expansion relies heavily on robust, interconnected digital infrastructure to meet rising connectivity demands. With broad market access, strategic geographic positioning, and a strengthening manufacturing sector, ASEAN has emerged as one of the fastest-growing foreign direct investment (FDI) regions globally.
In 2023, FDI in ASEAN hit a record $226 billion and is projected to reach $300 billion annually by 2030. Supported by major trade corridors linking East and West, ASEAN’s exports are also expected to grow 6.7% annually until 2030, outpacing the global average of 5%.
Equinix has interconnected its Malaysian data centers (KL1 and JH1) with its Singapore campus via Equinix Fabric, creating a robust cross-border digital ecosystem. This network links over 1,000 companies across industries, including cloud & network services, IT, financial services, and large enterprises.
One week after KL1 Phase 2 completion, Equinix officially opened its first AI-ready data center in Indonesia, JK1, on May 15, 2025. The state-of-the-art facility is designed to boost regional connectivity and reinforce Indonesia’s position as a leading digital economy in ASEAN.
JK1 provides access to over 50 global and local network providers and internet exchanges, creating a high-performance ecosystem for Indonesian businesses. Strategically located in Jakarta’s Central Business District and close to major internet exchanges, JK1 enables direct connections to Equinix IBX data centers worldwide, enhancing the region’s digital trade and cloud adoption.
