Heaptalk, Jakarta — AI-based language translator from Germany DeepL revealed that MSMEs in Indonesia face the main challenge of language differences in their efforts to expand into the global market. This challenge requires MSMEs to utilize the right technology, including AI, to overcome these language barriers.

Citing a recent survey conducted by CSA Research, 76% of online buyers tend to buy products with information presented in their own language. Meanwhile, another 75% say they are more likely to buy products from brands that provide customer service in their native language.

The survey also revealed that localization, adapting content to local language and context, of website pages and product information can improve the quality of customer experience and build customer bonds with the brand.

Chief Revenue Officer of DeepL David Parry-Jones explained the difference between translating and localizing content. “Translating means changing the text or message conveyed by a business into another language. However, localization involves a process that goes beyond simply changing the language, where localization means taking translated content and adapting it to local preferences, expectations, and wisdom,” said David (10/03).

Involving machine learning for instant accurate translation results

David further conveyed that MSMEs need the appropriate technology to localize content and achieve compliance with local nuances, one of which is AI-based translation tools. These tools involve automated machine learning that provides accurate translation results instantly. With its speed and accuracy, AI-based translation tools are claimed to be able to optimize workflow and boost efficiency.

DeepL itself has been at the forefront of the current AI revolution by experimenting with multiple language models since 2017 in a way that has never been done before—and from this research, DeepL Translator was born. Now, DeepL’s AI-based translation system is considered the most accurate translation device in the world,” explained David.

In Indonesia, there are at least 64 million MSMEs, or the equivalent of 90% of the total number of MSMEs in ASEAN. These small businesses contribute up to 61% of Indonesia’s total GDP. Thus, they undoubtedly play a significant role in the national economy.

AI-based translation tools like DeepL can help overcome financial barriers for MSMEs to reach global markets quickly and easily—making it a sophisticated and efficient solution for businesses that require high-quality translations in large quantities to support their efforts to penetrate international markets,” concluded David.
