Heaptalk, Jakarta — AI chatbot startup Character.AI officially introduced its latest calls feature, which allows users to have two-way voice conversations with AI characters.
The AI characters can speak different languages, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, Korean, Japanese, and Chinese. The feature is accessible to the public for free within the app, and the web version will be available soon.
With this new capability, users can make calls to AI avatars to hone language skills, conduct interviews, or craft exciting storylines. The AI characters are trained with diverse voices, pitches, accents, and personalities that can be selected according to user preferences. The call transcript will be stored as text chat, allowing users to view it as a text thread.
Making over 20 million calls

Prior to the launch, Character.AI tested the calls feature, which allowed more than 3 million users to make over 20 million calls, as TechCrunch reported. This new feature is claimed to deliver a smooth calling experience with reduced latency.
Earlier in March 2024, the startup released the voices feature, which enables users to hear the AI characters speak in one-on-one chats. This feature also allows users to create their voices. There are more than 1 million voices in the Character.AI’s app library.
