Heaptalk, Jakarta — UNHCR, United Nations Agency for Refugee Affairs, launched an Islamic Philanthropy 2022 annual report together with National Committee on Sharia Economics and Finance (KNEKS). On its report, the international organization highlighted that the funds has been allocated to support refugees in stabilizing their economy.

UNHCR received funds for refugees of 60%, reaching over USD 23.6 million in zakat donations and more than USD 11.7 million from donations, including Jariyah alms, with a total of USD270 million in 2021. These funds distribution includes dwelling supplies for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, primary needs relief items for Internally Displaced People (IDP) in Afghanistan and Nigeria, and food supplies for Rohingya refugees in India.

Attending the virtual report, the Executive Director of KNEKS, Ventje Rahardjo, stated, “KNEKS is proud to join UNHCR in launching the Islamic Philanthropy 2021 Annual Report in Indonesia, as it is aligned with the vision and strategic programs of KNEKS and other key stakeholders of Islamic economy in Indonesia in encouraging Islamic social finance,”

Also, he added, “KNEKS supports UNHCR, as one of the trusted distributors of zakat and Islamic social funds, in its mission to aid vulnerable refugees and displaced persons across the globe. I expect the launch of this report can develop the Islamic finance industry to boost the worldwide refugee economy, which aligns with the Islamic social finance vision in Indonesia,”

The total accepted contributions from its partners through Islamic UNHCR Philanthropy helped more than 1,2 million in 2021. In line with UNHCR’s report, Islamic philanthropy provides several benefits for people using its funds globally through the alms institutions, which are essential to distribute the funds, particularly for target accuracy.

“I appreciate our partners whose generosity enabled us to help the millions of people who have been homeless. Sustainable support is essential in assisting UNHCR to fulfill its mandate. Zakat donations and alms donations affirm the trust given to UNHCR to help those in need.” said Khaled Halifa, UNHCR’s Senior Advisor and Representative to Gulf Cooperation Council Countries.

The Islamic Philanthropy Program of UNHCR was launched in 2019 as a trusted and effective alms distributor to transform the internal refugees’ economy by collaborating with alms institutions and private sectors. This program is supported by 13 fatwa to ensure the highest transparency in every program, including donations for their lives to reach a stable economy and contribute to more than 4,5 million people worldwide.
