Heaptalk, Jakarta — Pertamina International Shipping (PIS), as Pertamina’s subholding in integrated marine logistics, recorded a reduction in carbon emissions of 25,445 tons of CO2 equivalent (CO2e) in 2023. This result exceeds up to 54% of the PIS emission reduction target, around 11,659 tons of CO2 equivalent.
“Carbon emissions in 2023 have also been reduced significantly compared to the realization in 2022, which was at 6,866 tons of CO2 equivalent, or an increase of up to 270%,” said PIS Corporate Secretary Muh. Aryomekka Firdaus in a written statement (04/26).
This success is the result of the strategic steps taken by PIS, which are divided into three categories, including efforts to reduce CO2 emissions with greenhouse gases (GHG) or to prevent the greenhouse effect, efforts to reduce non-greenhouse gases for non-carbon emissions, and efforts to lower emissions through preserving the ecosystem or nature and ecosystem-based solutions (NEBS).
To prevent the greenhouse effect or GHG, the company has made several measures, including the use of biofuel for PIS ships where 50% of the vessels operated already use Bio Fuel, the operation of vessels with dual fuel technology such as very large gas carriers (VLGC) which are more environmentally friendly, installation of energy-saving device equipment on vessels, installation of solar panels, operational efficiency, and other appropriate efforts that meet Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) and Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) certification.
Has planted 6,523 mangrove trees
In addition, PIS has also carried out a number of non-GHG efforts, such as installing ballast water treatment systems on more than 70% of ships to prevent the transfer and release of invasive aquatic species into destination waters and installing scrubbers to filter ship exhaust gas.
Aryo added, “Another act of loving the environment, namely PIS has also planted 6,523 mangrove trees, not only in PIS operational areas and terminals but also other areas as part of BerSEAnergi’s Social and Environmental Responsibility for the sea.”
Meanwhile, Pertamina‘s Vice President of Corporate Communication Fadjar Djoko Santoso stated that Pertamina Group’s multiple decarbonization initiative programs are a concrete manifestation of Pertamina’s support for the government’s target of achieving net zero emissions (NZE) by 2060.
“Throughout 2023, Pertamina Group’s decarbonization achievements reached 124%, exceeding the set target. This effort is carried out through two pillars, namely decarbonizing emissions from business activities and building a green business that produces clean and environmentally friendly energy,” concluded Fadjar.
