Heaptalk, Jakarta — In collaboration with the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), TikTok Indonesia has launched the #LawanJudol campaign to combat online gambling. This initiative aims to raise awareness about the dangers of online gambling, particularly among the younger generation, while encouraging more productive use of social media.
The campaign demonstrates the platform’s efforts to create a safer and more positive digital ecosystem. These efforts are realized through policies to suppress the spread of online gambling-related content, protect users from its risks with robust security and moderation features, and provide credible information from trusted sources. The campaign was launched at the Science Techno Park Auditorium, University of Indonesia, Depok, West Java (02/25), and was attended by government officials, academics, digital industry representatives, creator communities, and students.
Hilmi Adrianto, Head of Public Policy and Government Relations at TikTok Indonesia, emphasized that the platform has strict policies against online gambling, prohibiting all content that promotes or facilitates gambling activities. From January to December 2024, TikTok removed approximately 900,000 videos related to online gambling.
Of these, around 86% were removed before receiving any views, showcasing the effectiveness of the platform’s proactive moderation system, which is supported by automated technology. More than 99% of gambling-related content removals were also conducted proactively without waiting for user reports. Additionally, TikTok removed over 2.2 million comments and nearly 35,000 paid advertisements promoting gambling during the same period.
The need of cross-sector collaboration
“Through the #LawanJudol campaign page on the platform, we also provide credible and educational information from trusted sources to enhance digital literacy among the public. We hope this campaign can be a collaborative step toward building a more positive and safer digital ecosystem,” Hilmi said (02/25).
Alexander Sabar, Director General of Digital Space Oversight at the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi), emphasized the importance of cross-sector collaboration in combating the growing prevalence of online gambling. Online gambling impacts not only financial aspects but also mental health and the future of the younger generation.
He further stated, “Collaboration between the government, industry, and academia is essential to create a safer and more educational digital space. The government is committed to tightening oversight and working with various stakeholders, including digital platforms like TikTok. We appreciate TikTok’s efforts in supporting digital education through the #LawanJudol campaign, which actively involves the younger generation.”
Through synergy between the government, communities, and TikTok, this anti-online gambling campaign is expected to reach a wider audience, particularly the younger generation, and have a tangible impact in improving digital literacy and preventing risky behaviors, including online gambling.
