Heaptalk, Jakarta — Microsoft plans to invest USD1.7 billion over the next four years in the archipelago’s new cloud and AI infrastructure. The investment will also cover AI skilling opportunities for around 840,000 people and support the nation’s growing developer community.
The company elaborated on the digital infrastructure plan built on its Empower Indonesia initiative, announced in February 2021, to accelerate inclusive economic growth. The program includes the company’s strategy to construct a data center in the archipelago.
On the other hand, the investment announced today will enable Microsoft to meet the growing demand for cloud computing services in Indonesia. It will also allow Indonesia to capitalize on the significant economic and productivity opportunities presented by the latest AI technology.
“This new generation of AI is reshaping how people live and work everywhere, including in Indonesia. The investment that includes digital infrastructure, skilling, and developer support will bolster the archipelago to thrive in this new era,” Microsoft’s CEO and Chairman, Satya Nadella, conveyed during the Microsoft Build: AI Day Jakarta agenda. Further, Nadella highlighted the critical role of developers in harnessing AI to fulfill Indonesia’s potential as a digital economy. Microsoft will continue to foster the growth of Indonesia’s developer community through new initiatives, such as AI Odyssey, which is expected to help 10,000 local developers become AI subject matter experts by learning new skills.
Microsoft’s skilling commitment consists of:
- Students with technical and vocational education and training in AI skills through the AI Tech for Indonesia program
- Women with opportunities and support to build careers in cybersecurity via the new Ready4AI&Security program
- Young people with AI fluency training to enhance the employability and work readiness of those from underserved and underrepresented communities
- Employees of nonprofit organizations with knowledge of and skills in AI and digital technologies
To ensure a responsible AI era, Microsoft is actively collaborating with the Indonesian government, civil society, academics, and industry peers to ensure AI serves as a force for good. In January 2024, this giant tech company also voluntarily committed to implementing the AI ethical values highlighted in the Indonesian Ministry of Communication and Information Technology’s Circular Letter No 9/2023.
“We aim to empower Indonesians with the infrastructure and skills needed for the AI era, aligning with our national vision for digital progress. It is a crucial step towards making Indonesia a hub for digital talent and innovation,” President Director of Microsoft Indonesia, Dharma Simorangkir, concluded.
