Heaptalk, Jakarta — Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) Arifin Tasrif unveiled the Indonesian Government’s programs and policies for transforming to clean cooking.
The transformation started with firewood, then kerosene, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and, most recently, an induction stove. According to Arifin, information dissemination is one key to successfully implementing the energy transition.
“Successful implementation of the energy transition requires active participation from stakeholders, including the public. In Indonesia, people-centered clean energy transition is achieved through disseminating information regarding the benefits of transitional energy. In the household sector, the LPG conversion program to induction stoves will reduce cooking costs by up to 24 percent and increase efficiency by up to 40%. Induction stoves are also more practical to move,” explained Arifin at the IEA headquarters in Paris, France (04/25).
In the industrial and commercial sectors, energy management and efficiency of the equipment used will be helpful in reducing energy consumption by around 20%. In the transportation sector, converting internal combustion engines to electric vehicles will save around 50% on fuel costs and reduce maintenance costs. He said, “To support the accelerated implementation of the EV program, the Indonesian Government is providing incentives, infrastructure, and ecosystem development.”
Utilizing former mining land for energy sources
In addition, the government is also opening up opportunities for the community to transition from a fossil-based economy by utilizing former mining land for other energy sources (energy back to energy), such as biomass plantations or solar power plant locations. In this way, the community can still utilize ex-mining land.
Arifin added, “Apart from that, the Government also urges the public to plant mangrove trees, which can absorb large amounts of carbon, up to 50 tons of CO2 per hectare annually. The carbon market will create financial opportunities for the community while reducing emissions.”
The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources is also building a foundation of awareness regarding the environmentally friendly energy transition through educational programs, such as Patriot Energy and Guerilla Academy. “The key to success in attracting public participation in the energy transition is well-informed dissemination of the benefits of the energy transition, the creation of business opportunities, and awareness gained through early education, where knowledge is the basis for participation,” he concluded.
