Copilot inside Microsoft 365 is an AI feature powered by the latest large language model (LLM) developed by OpenAI, GPT-4, claimed to increase productivity.
Heaptalk, Jakarta — Microsoft officially introduces Copilot, the new artificial intelligence (AI) feature powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4, built into its productivity apps. Users can utilize Copilot in Microsoft 365 products, including Word documents, Excel spreadsheets, PowerPoint presentations, and Outlook emails.
In Microsoft Word, Copilot can provide a first draft to edit and iterate on which is claimed to save time in writing, sourcing, and editing. However, the company warns that the AI feature can be wrong sometimes. Hence, users are still in control as the author prompts Copilot to shorten, rewrite, or give feedback.
Copilot in Microsoft PowerPoint can help users to make presentations with a simple hint and enhance appropriate content from a document users made last week or last year. While in Microsoft Excel, Copilot can help users to analyze trends and make proficient data visualizations in a short time.
“Today marks the next major step in the evolution of how we interact with computing, which will fundamentally change the way we work and unlock a new wave of productivity growth. With our new copilot for work, we’re giving people more agency and making technology more accessible through the most universal interface—natural language,” said Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, Satya Nadella, in a written statement.
Increasing productivity and shortening work time
A study by GitHub demonstrated that the new AI feature could increase user productivity. Among developers who use GitHub Copilot, 88% said they have become more productive, 74% said they can focus on more fulfilling work, and 77% said this feature helps them spend less time looking for information or examples.
Currently, the AI feature is in the trial phase with a small group of customers. “We are testing Copilot with a small group of customers to get feedback and improve our models as we scale, and we will expand to more soon,” said Jared in a written statement.
In addition, Microsoft also unveils a new feature namely Business Chat that functions across large language models (LLM), Microsoft 365 apps, and users’ data, including calendars, emails, chats, documents, meetings, and contacts. Jared explained that Business Chat can make a status update based on the morning’s meeting, emails, and chat threads when users ask to “Tell my team how we updated the product strategy”.
Further, Microsoft stated that Copilot will be integrated into all of its productivity apps, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams, Viva, Power Platform, and more. “We will share more on pricing and licensing soon. Earlier this month we announced Dynamics 365 Copilot as the world’s first AI Copilot in both CRM and ERP to bring the next-generation AI to every line of business,” concluded Jared.
