Heaptalk, Jayapura – Indonesian telecommunications company Indosat Ooredoo Hutchison (IOH) inaugurated an Artificial Intelligence Experience Center (AIEC) in Jayapura, Papua, in a move aimed at advancing equitable access to digital technologies across the archipelago (05/20).
The launch coincided with Indonesia’s National Awakening Day and was attended by Deputy Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Nezar Patria, IOH President Director and CEO Vikram Sinha, as well as representatives from technology partners including Huawei and the Wadhwani Foundation.
“This center represents a strategic step in ensuring that no region is left behind in Indonesia’s digital transformation journey,” Nezar said during the ceremony. “We want to ensure that even the most remote parts of the country, such as Papua, benefit from emerging technologies like AI.”
The center will prioritize applications of artificial intelligence in education and healthcare. In education, the technology will support personalized learning models and improve accessibility for students in remote and underdeveloped regions. In healthcare, AI will be used to assist in the early detection of diseases such as tuberculosis—particularly vital in regions with limited medical resources.
IOH CEO Vikram Sinha emphasized the company’s broader mission to empower communities through connectivity and innovation. “We believe technology can be a great equalizer,” Sinha said. “Through this initiative, we are not just introducing AI, but we are also building the infrastructure and capacity that allow communities to thrive in the digital era.”
The AIEC is supported by IOH’s 5G network and includes a range of facilities such as training rooms, digital education platforms, and co-working spaces for students, developers, and healthcare professionals.
Chandra Pradyot Singh, IOH’s Executive Vice President for the Jakarta Raya region, said the initiative reflects a shared responsibility to build an inclusive digital ecosystem. “Our presence in Jayapura is a commitment to ensuring that digital transformation uplifts everyone, regardless of geography,” he said.
The center is also expected to serve as a training ground for digital talent in eastern Indonesia, contributing to the development of local innovation ecosystems and promoting long-term socio-economic growth in the region. Indosat’s initiative also is perceived to align with the government’s vision of a digitally connected and inclusive Indonesia, particularly as the country navigates rapid technological shifts and the rise of AI-driven solutions.
