Heaptalk, Jakarta — The industrial sector, particularly the electronics industry, continues to grow amid global challenges and digitalization. The growth rate of the computer and electronics goods industry in 2024 is 6.16%.
“This is quite high, with the contribution of the electronics industry to the national GDP remaining stable over the past five years. It means that people must own at least one mobile phone. Even street vendors have mobile phones. This means that it is no longer considered a luxury item,” stated Sopar Halomoan Sirait, Secretary of the Directorate General of Metal, Machinery, Transportation Equipment, and Electronics Industries (Ilmate), Ministry of Industry, during the launch of the latest Motorola smartphone in Central Jakarta (02/18).
The export value of electronic products up to November 2024 reached US$9.24 billion, indicating that the mobile phone industry has grown and developed. There are now around 13 mobile phone plants in Indonesia and five electronic manufacturing services (EMS), one of which is PT Sat Nusapersada, which manufactures Motorola for the Indonesian market. Sopar voiced, “Telecommunications equipment, household electronics, and components dominate the export value. Investment in 2024 has reached 8.29 trillion. This is quite significant.”
Boosting the domestic component level

The government has issued Minister of Industry Regulation No. 38 of 2024 concerning the Registration Mark of Mobile and Tablet Computer Products, as well as the Ministry of Communication and Information Regulation, which encourages the application of a trace code for the domestic component level (TKDN) for each mobile phone, handheld computer, and tablet product using 4G signals and above.
According to Sopar, the policy has a positive impact on the growth of the mobile phone, handheld computer, and tablet industry. In 2024, domestic mobile phone, handheld computer, and tablet production reached 49.42 million units. He added, “It covers about one-fifth to one-sixth of Indonesia’s population. It means almost all Indonesians already own a mobile phone.”
Every price of mobile phones and tablet computers using long-term evolution (LTE) and international mobile telecommunication 2022 networks produced, imported, and traded in Indonesia must have a minimum domestic component level value of 35%. “Hence, it must be produced domestically to boost higher local content, at least 35%, before it can be sold in Indonesia,” Sopar concluded.
