Heaptalk, Jakarta — Indonesia’s aquaculture startup, eFishery, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), which was conducted at Cibinong Science Center, Bogor. This cooperation enables the unicorn startup and BRIN to collaborate and conduct more research in order to promote innovation in the aquaculture sector.
According to eFishery, this strategic affiliation is crucial for maximizing research potential in this industry. In more detail, the scope of this cooperation would cover the preparation of models for utilizing research and innovation results, joint use of facilities and infrastructure owned by these two entities, and dissemination of research and innovation results through publications, seminars, and technical guidance. This step is expected to optimize the principle of partnerships that mutually benefit each other in advancing the Indonesian aquaculture sector.
“This collaboration is an important milestone in an effort to transform and improve the aquaculture sector in Indonesia. Apart of being the initial step to carry out research and development in aquaculture, the MoU signing includes exchanging information on research and innovation results for our MSME partners.”
This unicorn startup continues to strengthen its innovations that change the paradigm of fish and shrimp cultivation, focusing on three pillars: supporting global food supply through aquaculture development, providing affordable technology for all parties, and reducing the digital divide through an inclusive digital economy.
From an economic perspective, this startup has contributed almost 3% of Indonesia’s fisheries sector’s total GDP. By providing an inclusive digital economy for Indonesia’s fish cultivators, eFishery noted fish and shrimp sales transactions of up to US$509 million (around Rp8 trillion) and recorded fish and shrimp feed sales transactions worth US$254 million, or approximately Rp4 trillion over a decade. eFishery has provided integrated solutions that cover the entire fish and shrimp farming ecosystem, from access to feed to funding, even to markets, for more than 200,000 farmers in 280 cities and districts in the archipelago.
“Following Presidential Regulation Number 2 of 2022, the President has mandated Indonesia’s entrepreneurs to manage technology-based businesses to increase their production, distribution, marketing, and sales efficiency. For this reason, Indonesia’s BRIN is set up to collaborate with this startup to grant a wider impact on the potential of aquaculture technology.” Deputy for Research and Innovation Utilization at the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), Hendrian.
