Heaptalk, Jakarta — Garmin Indonesia unveiled that running, tennis, and golf were the most popular sports in Indonesia in 2024. Interest in outdoor sports such as track running, e-bike riding, and gravel cycling increased globally.

These findings were published in the Garmin Fitness Report 2024, showcasing Garmin users’ sports trends and fitness habits worldwide. The report draws data from Garmin Connect. According to Chandrawidhi Desideriani, Senior Marketing Communication Manager at Garmin Indonesia, the data indicates that more people are now choosing to be active, improving their quality of life through exercise and maintaining balance in body and mind with sufficient sleep.

“Garmin supports every individual’s journey towards a healthier and more energetic lifestyle. With advanced technology in Garmin smartwatches, users can monitor various health aspects in real-time, from energy levels and sleep quality to stress levels, making each step towards fitness more measurable and directed,” Chandrawidhi said.

Increase in average daily steps

According to data from Garmin Connect, outdoor running saw a significant increase of 65%, and indoor running on treadmills also showed a 15% increase. Some people prefer indoor running for various practical and convenience-related reasons, such as being unaffected by weather conditions, enhanced security, and ease of access at home or the gym. The application recorded 5,560,506 running activities and 2,355,822 walking activities by Garmin users in Indonesia during 2024.

Globally, the data shows a 6% increase in users’ average daily steps. In Indonesia, Garmin users recorded an average of 5,375 steps per day. However, this number is still relatively low compared to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommendations for engaging in 11,000-12,000 steps of aerobic activity per day.

Throughout 2024, golf became one of the favorite activities for Garmin users in Indonesia, with 230,425 recorded golf activities. The growth in public courses, availability of relatively affordable equipment, and more flexible game formats have made golf more accessible to younger people.

In addition, tennis has also become increasingly popular, recording 78,722 activities throughout 2024. The ease of access and availability of tennis courts have contributed to the growing popularity of this sport, especially with the emergence of several celebrity tennis players in Indonesia, further strengthening this positive trend.
