Heaptalk, Jakarta — PT SGMW Motor Indonesia, known as Wuling Indonesia, plans to expand its export market to Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, and South Africa. This Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer will also produce a 7-seater MPV type of EV.

Furthermore, the subsidiary of SAIC-GM-Wuling Automobile (SGMW) has also committed to enhancing the EV supply system by collaborating with several Chinese companies to invest in Indonesia. Over its seven years of operation in Indonesia, the company has invested more than US$700 million, reached around 130,000 buyers, and exported its Indonesian-manufactured products to Thailand.

“Wuling is also the first factory capable of producing electric cars and achieving a 40% local component level in Indonesia,” stated Shi Guoyong, President Director of PT SGMW Motor Indonesia, during a meeting with the Minister of Industry, Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita, in Beijing (06/18).

Making Indonesia a hub for exporting products worldwide

According to Shi, the support and incentives provided by the Indonesian government have enabled the company to invest smoothly and produce three types of EV products. One of the company’s stakeholders, SAIC Co., which produces MG vehicles, has taken the initiative to scale up investment by adding the MG brand to the EV lineup produced by Wuling. Shi added, “We prioritize EV development, primarily by launching high-quality products with advanced technology for both the Wuling and MG brands.”

On the occasion, Minister of Industry Agus Gumiwang Kartasasmita encouraged this company as one of the first EV manufacturers in Indonesia to increase its production and make the country a production hub for exports. “We appreciate Wuling as one of the first companies to introduce EVs in Indonesia. Moreover, Wuling has made Indonesia the only EV manufacturing facility outside of China,” Agus said in a written statement.

In addition, Agus urged Wuling to enhance and optimize its production capacity in Indonesia and make the country a hub for exporting Wuling products worldwide.
