Heaptalk, Jakarta — President Donald Trump announced a 90-day suspension of retaliatory tariffs, effective immediately. However, this tariff suspension excludes China. Instead, the U.S. raised tariffs on Chinese goods to 125%, sharply from the previous 104%.
The announcement of tariff suspension came only hours after this import tariff policy took effect. During suspension, the U.S. will negotiate with trade partners to reach tariff agreements, though a baseline 10% duty remains in place.
“Based on the lack of respect that China has shown to the World’s Markets, I am hereby raising the Tariff charged to China by the United States of America to 125%, effective immediately. At some point, hopefully in the near future, China will realize that the days of ripping off the U.S.A., and other Countries, is no longer sustainable or acceptable,” Trump wrote a post on his Social Truth account (04/10).
He added that the suspension followed appeals from over 75 countries, which contacted U.S. officials, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the U.S. Trade Representative (USTR), to negotiate issues regarding this tariff policy. He added, “More than 75 Countries have called Representatives of the United States, including the Departments of Commerce, Treasury, and the USTR, to negotiate a solution to the subjects being discussed relative to Trade, Trade Barriers, Tariffs, Currency Manipulation, and Non Monetary Tariffs.”
