Heaptalk, Jakarta — Tesla called for another round of departmental layoffs, as Electrek reported (05/06). The exact number of employees affected by this recent policy is still unclear.
Based on information from several sources familiar with the matter, Tesla sent layoff notification emails to employees in the software, service, and engineering departments between Friday and Sunday.
The role termination is expected after Tesla CEO Elon Musk dismissed Rebecca Tinucci, the head of charging infrastructure, and her entire team at the end of April 2024. He then emailed other executives to inform them of his dismissal.
Musk previously explained the reasons for this layoff policy to his employees. The rapid growth in employee numbers over the past few years has resulted in recruiting inefficiencies and duplication of roles. In mid-April, Musk sent a memo to employees stating that the company was preparing for the next growth phase through cost reductions and increased productivity.
The company had a bad financial performance due to lower-than-expected vehicle deliveries. “As part of this effort, we have done a thorough review of the organization and made the difficult decision to reduce our headcount by more than 10% globally,” stated Elon Musk in a memo for his staff, as quoted by Reuters (04/15).
