Heaptalk — Indian multinational enterprise Tata Group is reportedly planning to produce iPhones in India according to an announcement by India’s Deputy IT Minister Rajeev Chandrasekhar on social media platform X (10/27).

The iPhones produced by Tata are projected for domestic and global markets. The group will start making iPhones through a manufacturing unit Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India which was previously owned by Taiwan-based Wistron Corp.

Wistron is one of the three iPhone manufacturers in India, apart from Foxconn and Pegatron Corp. The manufacturer started assembling iPhones in the country in 2017 as reported by Reuters. The announcement was made after the Wistron board approved the sale of Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India to Tata Electronics for US$ 125 million.

“Wistron Corp. held a Board of Directors Meeting today and granted approval for its subsidiaries SMS InfoComm (Singapore) Pte. Ltd. and Wistron Hong Kong Limited, to sign the Share Purchase Agreement with Tata Electronics Private Limited (TEPL) for the sale of its 100% indirect stake in Wistron InfoComm Manufacturing India Private Limited (WMMI),” stated Wistron as shared by Rajeev Chandrasekhar (10/27).

Further, Chandrasekhar conveyed that the production will start in 2.5 years. “Now within just and half years, Tata Companies will now start making iPhones from India for domestic and global markets from India. Congratulations to the Tata team for taking over Wistron operations. Thank you Wistron for your contributions, and great going for Apple in building a global supply chain from India with Indian companies at its helm,” said Chandrasekhar on his X account (10/27).

Founded in 1868, currently, Tata Group comprises 30 companies that operate in more than 100 countries. In 2022-2023, the combined revenue of Tata companies will be $150 billion. These companies collectively employ more than 1 million people. There are 29 Tata public companies with a combined market capitalization of $300 billion as of July 31, 2023.
