Heaptalk, Jakarta — A social enterprise who offers sustainable and ethical handwoven rattan product made by Central Kalimantan’s indigenous, Handep presents new collection during Kalea Charity Bazaar 2023.
Chief Community Officer, Aini Abdul conveyed’ philosophy of these products, “Dayak’s handwoven rattan craft is a heritage for us, and forest conservation has an important role in maintaining this tradition. Rattan is widely used by Dayak tribe to create crafts, furniture, and also becomes the building material.” (12/11)
In the bazaar that was organized by well-known fashion designer, Ai Syarief, Aini also explained that the business provides multiple benefits, including increasing people awareness towards sustainability principle, preserving cultural heritage, as well as improving the society’s welfare in Central Kalimantan. This move also helps to increase the awareness of Dayak’s young generation to the meaning of this cultural heritage and the importance of conserving the culture.
Established five years ago, Handed recently employs 250 artisans and ready to expand more. “Today we are supported by 250 artisans, and if the fund is sufficient, next year we will expand and involve 500 artisans,” stated Aini.
In more detail, Aini explained that the product is exclusive because the artisan only can produce around 4 products per month. Even, the artisan needs around 45 days to create products with a special design. Adopting sustainability principle, the brand managed to attract buyers from Europe, Japan, Korea, and Indonesia.
The quality of this brand also is recognized globally. According to Aini, Handep won artisan award and led the product to be showcased in Japan as the Indonesia’s featured product.
