Heaptalk, Jakarta — Samsung SDI announced its agreement with Hyundai Motor to supply electric vehicle batteries targeting the European market (10/23). This deal marks the first partnership between the two companies in the field of EV batteries which will last for seven years starting in 2026.
The EV batteries that will be produced are the sixth edition of the Samsung SDI prismatic battery called P6. This battery type features an NCA cathode as high as 91% nickel and Samsung SDI’s proprietary silicon-based anode which is claimed to maximize energy density to the highest level.
P6 batteries will be manufactured at Samsung SDI’s plant in Hungary and supplied to Hyundai Motor’s production facility in Europe. This partnership is expected to enable Hyundai Motor to diversify battery form factors through the supply of prismatic batteries.
Additionally, for the automaker, this supply deal will provide an opportunity to scale up the adoption of prismatic batteries. Further, both parties will continue their partnership to explore next-generation battery platforms.
“We have taken the very first step forward with Hyundai Motor Company that is leading the global automobile industry. The company will make best efforts to help Hyundai Motor reinforce its global market leadership by expanding long-term partnership with the automaker by providing the customer with unrivalled technologies and supreme quality,” stated President and CEO of Samsung SDI Yoonho Choi.
Building EV battery plant in North America
Previously, Samsung SDI and automaker Stellantis N.V. also announced the second battery manufacturing facility in the United States at Kokomo, Indiana as part of the StarPlus Energy joint venture (10/11). The new plant is expected to begin production in early 2027 with an annual capacity of 34 gigawatt hours (GWh). The first plan, also in Kokomo, is still under construction and will open in Q1 2025 with an annual production capacity of 33 GWh.
Through the construction of this battery plant under StarPlus Energy, Samsung SDI is expected to establish its largest production for EV batteries in North America. Choi said, “We expect Stellantis brand vehicles powered by Samsung SDI batteries featuring supreme technologies to contribute to accelerating the U.S. transition to an era of electric vehicles.”
