Heaptalk, Jakarta — Pertamina through PT Kilang Pertamina Internasional (KPI) Refinery Unit VI Balongan inaugurated the Balongan Refinery solar power plant with a capacity of 1.51 megawatt peak (MWp) in Indramayu Regency, West Java (02/19).

Balongan Refinery solar power plant has two separate areas with capacities of 1 MWp and 0.51 MWp respectively. This solar power plant was built based on cooperation within Pertamina Group, namely KPI and Pertamina New & Renewable Energy (Pertamina NRE).

Apart from increasing the reliability of the power supply, this plant is one of the Balongan Refinery’s efforts to carry out decarbonization and as part of the implementation of the ESG rating for KPI and Pertamina as a whole. The Balongan Refinery solar power plant is estimated to be able to distribute 781 MWh of energy per year and reduce carbon emissions by almost 600 tons of CO2 per year.

The inauguration was carried out by KPI Operations Director Didik Bahagia, Pertamina NRE Project & Operations Director Norman Ginting, GM Refinery Unit VI Balongan Sugeng Firmanto, and Pertamina VP Infrastructure Master Plan Muhammad Yasir Arofat.

“We are proud to be part of the decarbonization efforts carried out at Kilang Pertamina Internasional. The utilization of the solar power plant at Balongan Refinery is a form of collaboration between Pertamina NRE and Kilang Pertamina Internasional. We believe that solid synergy will strengthen efforts to achieve Pertamina’s net zero emission aspirations,” said Pertamina NRE Project & Operations Director Norman Ginting at the inauguration of the solar power plant (02/19).

On the occasion, KPI Operations Director Didik Bahagia said, “By integrating decarbonization into operational units, KPI is ready to have a real and positive impact on the environment while contributing to achieving global sustainability goals.”

Overall, to date, the solar power plant installed in the KPI operational area has reached a capacity of 9.87 MWp, consisting of the Dumai Refinery 3.77 MW, the Plaju Refinery 2.25 MW, the Balongan Refinery 1.51 MW, and the Cilacap Refinery 2.34 MW. The accumulated energy distributed reached 10 million kWh and reduced emissions by more than 6 million tons of CO2 or the equivalent of planting 7 thousand mature trees.

Meanwhile, PT Pertamina (Persero) Vice President of Corporate Communication Fadjar Djoko Santoso conveyed that to accelerate the low-carbon business, his party is strengthening synergy and collaboration in all Pertamina Group business lines. This effort is to achieve Indonesia’s Net Zero Emission target by 2060.

“Low carbon businesses have great potential in the energy transition era. For this reason, the involvement of all sub-holdings and subsidiaries is needed. One of them is by utilizing solar power plant at Pertamina’s internal locations,” Fadjar concluded.
