Heaptalk, Jakarta — MG Motors has launched the MG Comet EV, a rebadged version of the Wuling Air EV, in India. Interestingly, this electric vehicle is now offered with a separate battery scheme. Hence, its price is only ₹499,000, or around Rp90 million.

“Previously, when sold with a battery, the MG Comet EV was priced at around Rp140 million. The price has dropped by Rp50 million to reach more consumers,” MG explained on Tuesday (09/24).

The MG has a 17.3 kWh lithium-ion battery, providing a maximum range of 230 km. Charging the battery from 0 to 100% takes seven hours. Interestingly, the battery uses the Battery as a Service (BaaS) scheme, meaning consumers don’t need to buy the vehicle’s battery but can rent it at an affordable cost.

Owners of the MG Comet EV only need to pay ₹2.5, or around Rp300, per kilometer. This means that for 1,000 km of use, consumers will only spend around Rp300,000. “With BaaS, we have created a platform for easy ownership, making our EVs more accessible. I am confident that this unique ownership model will further boost EV adoption in the country,” said Satinder Singh Bajwa, Chief Commercial Officer of MG Motor India.

In terms of appearance, the MG Comet EV features a small, boxy design, closely resembling the Wuling Air EV sold in Indonesia and China. The most noticeable difference is in the brand emblem. This compact vehicle has several standard features, such as an integrated floating widescreen with a 10.25-inch display, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay connectivity, navigation system, audio system, ABS with EBD braking system, reverse parking camera, and airbags.

The MG Comet EV is 2,974 mm in length, 1,505 mm in width, and 1,640 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,010 mm. These dimensions are almost identical to those of the Wuling Air EV, except for its slightly taller height. The Comet EV is powered by a permanent magnet motor (PMSM) capable of producing up to 41.42 hp and 110 Nm of peak torque. These specifications are transmitted to the wheels through an automatic transmission.
