Heaptalk, Jakarta — Hyundai Motor Group officially entered the advanced air mobility (AAM) sector in Indonesia by conducting a proof of concept (PoC) for integrated ground-air mobility at Aji Pangeran Tumenggung Pranoto Airport in Samarinda, East Kalimantan (07/29), as reported by Kontan.

Through this demonstration, the company aims to introduce a comprehensive mobility service that integrates a Mobility-as-a-Service (MaaS) platform. This service, along with environmentally friendly electric vehicles and advanced air mobility, is specifically designed for the Indonesian market.

This step highlights the potential of advanced air mobility in shaping the future of mobility, especially in the new capital, Nusantara, which is designed as a future eco-friendly city. Hyundai Motor Group also showcased the S-A2, the latest generation of advanced air mobility aircraft, while outlining its vision for AAM in Indonesia.

Commercializing AAM by 2028

The company has also completed its first overseas flight of the Optionally Piloted Personal Air Vehicle (OPPAV), an AAM technology demonstrator developed in collaboration with the Korea Aerospace Research Institute. “Developing the AAM market requires more than only aircraft innovation. This effort demands collaboration across the entire aviation industry,” said Cheolung Kim, AAM Business Development Officer at Hyundai Motor Group AAM Division, as quoted by Kontan.

According to Kim, Hyundai Motor Group and Supernal will continue research and development to commercialize AAM by 2028. He added, “We will also maintain strategic partnerships with the Indonesian government and institutions to lead the future AAM ecosystem.”

Furthermore, Kim emphasized that Indonesia, the world’s fourth most populous country and a key player in Southeast Asia, is the largest aviation market in the region, with more than 18,000 islands. Additionally, Indonesia has significant potential for future AAM applications. “Recognizing the tremendous growth potential, Hyundai signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation and the Nusantara Capital Authority in 2022 to collaborate on developing future mobility solutions,” Kim concluded.
