Heaptalk, Jakarta — Global digital infrastructure company Equinix has launched its first data center in Indonesia, JK1, through a joint venture with Astra International (05/15). The facility was built with a total investment of approximately $74 million.
Located in South Jakarta, a key business district, JK1 was constructed near major internet exchange points in the region. This allows businesses to connect with Equinix’s global International Business Exchange (IBX) data center network. The data center provides access to a local ecosystem of over 50 cloud, network, and internet exchange services, including Alibaba Cloud, Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud.
Indonesia’s digital economy is projected to reach $130 billion by 2025, driving the need for robust digital infrastructure to enhance connectivity and support future technologies like artificial intelligence (AI). Equinix aims to provide a cloud-based platform for Indonesian businesses to build and scale their network and data services rapidly.

Haris Izmee, President Director of Equinix Indonesia, stated that e-commerce remains the largest sector in Indonesia’s digital economy, with a market potential of $120 billion by 2025. This growth is further fueled by rapid cloud adoption, increasing demand for high-performance, scalable digital infrastructure. “As Indonesia prepares to achieve its Golden Indonesia 2045 vision, becoming a leading digital hub in Asia will be crucial for long-term economic transformation. The launch of JK1 is a major milestone for Equinix, and we remain committed to supporting Indonesia’s ambitions for sustainable economic growth,” Haris said during the JK1 launch in South Jakarta (05/15).
Integrating sustainability principles
In more detail, JK1 is an eight-story building with an initial capacity of 550 server racks, which can be expanded to 1,600 racks and 5,300 square meters of colocation space upon full completion. This facility offers connectivity services, including Equinix Fabric and Internet Access. Haris added, “Our presence in one of the largest internet hubs means our customers benefit from low latency, and we can deliver top-tier services through Equinix Fabric, Equinix Internet Exchange, and Equinix Internet Access. The first phase went live in February, and the second phase, with 1,600 cabinets, is expected to launch next year.”

This data center integrates sustainability principles, utilizing innovative cooling technologies such as cooling arrays & liquid cooling for efficient heat management in high-performance computing workloads, including AI. It is designed for an average Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.41 at full load. Moreover, JK1 operates under the globally recognized A1A standards by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
Equinix maintains a >99.999% uptime record globally. Its network spans 260+ data centers across 74 metros in 35 countries. Equinix operates 60 data centers in Asia-Pacific in 16 major cities, including Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, and Singapore.
