Heaptalk, Jakarta — The National Agency of Drug and Food Control (BPOM) held a forum titled ‘Building Public Literacy on Safe Cosmetics’ in Jakarta on Tuesday (08/13).
In her opening remarks, Penny K. Lukito, the Head of BPOM, stated that this event is part of BPOM’s Inspiration Program to enhance public literacy on safe cosmetics. “The public needs to understand that safe cosmetics are low-risk and must be high quality and beneficial. BPOM is committed to ensuring that cosmetic products on the market meet safety and quality standards,” she said.
BPOM invited stakeholders in the beauty industry, including makeup artists, beauty media owners, social media content creators, and dermatologists, to join the forum to enhance literacy about safe cosmetics. This collaboration is expected to broaden public understanding and awareness of the risks associated with cosmetic products.
Furthermore, BPOM hopes to improve monitoring and receive feedback on suspected harmful cosmetic products through this event. Penny also hopes the event will serve as a platform for education and promotion regarding regulations, ethics, and scientific understanding of safe cosmetics.
On this occasion, renowned beauty content creator Christy Raina Septiningrum Mamesah, known for her #TeamSawoMatang campaign, urged the public to recognize the importance of choosing safe cosmetics. She explained that the cosmetics market in Indonesia is still flooded with instant whitening products containing harmful substances such as mercury and hydroquinone.
Christy added, “As part of #TeamSawoMatang, I want to emphasize that tan skin is beautiful and valuable. This aligns with BPOM’s efforts to ban mercury and instant products.” Concluding her presentation, she stated that this campaign aims to raise awareness about the health risks of unsafe cosmetic products.
