Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Ministry of Industry continues to encourage the development of the cocoa industry to amplify its competitiveness globally.
The archipelago possesses tremendous potential in the evolution of the cocoa processing industry. Moreover, Indonesia is claimed to be the third most significant cocoa producer worldwide, with a total production of around 700,000 tons annually.
According to the Director of the Beverage, Tobacco Products and Refreshments Industry at the Ministry of Industry, Edy Sutopo, Indonesia has around 11 cocoa processing companies, with a total export value reaching US$1.12 billion in 2022. This industry also plays an essential role in supporting downstream and increasing the added value of local cocoa.
With the multiplier effect of the cocoa processing industry, Edy conveyed that the government will strive to make the country the leader of the cocoa industry and its processing. Indonesia outperforms intermediate products, including cocoa paste/liquor, cocoa cake, cocoa butter, and cocoa powder. In his further statement, the Indonesian cocoa product market attains 9.17% of world market demand.
“Apart from the cocoa sector, the country has potential in the chocolate and artisan industries. The chocolate industry has produced a mass of products, reaching around 900 companies with a total production capacity of more than 462,000 tons annually. This output drives the value of our exports, reaching US$76.89 million in 2022.” Edy added.
Regarding the artisan chocolate industry sector, Edy revealed that the country has 31 companies with a production capacity of 1,242 tons per year in 2022. This artisan chocolate uses premium raw materials.
To elevate these potentials, The Ministry of Industry continues to be proactive in carrying out various strategic programs and formulating appropriate policies to spur the performance of cocoa-based industries. Apart from that, his party will also prepare competent human resources, encourage the use of technology, and optimize branding programs.
“We will increase cocoa productivity and strengthen sustainability and traceability programs in the supply chain, increase local chocolate consumption, carry out national and international events promotions, and implement a production machine restructuring program. With its 600 chocolate variants in the country, Indonesia’s government will aggressively create the latest businesses in this sector.” Edy concluded.
