Heaptalk, Jakarta — Illegal online gambling in Indonesia has become a significant disruptor of national economic growth. Minister of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) Budi Arie Setiadi emphasized that one of the direct impacts of online gambling is its effect on people’s purchasing power.

“Online gambling not only destroys family finances but also affects the broader economy of society and the nation. It reduces purchasing power, which weakens our economic foundation,” Budi said on Wednesday (09/18).

According to Minister Budi Arie, online gambling poses a real threat to realizing Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045, as envisioned by President Joko Widodo. The Ministry of Kominfo employs the 5K formula to combat this. He explained, “To eradicate online gambling, the first thing needed is commitment, the second is concern, the third is consistency, the fourth is courage, and the fifth is resistance to temptation.”

The eradication of online gambling is one of the tasks President Joko Widodo has mandated for him. Since being appointed as Minister of Kominfo, this task has been a priority emphasized by the President. Budi added, “Another threat from online gambling is the rise in criminal activity, a decline in productivity, family divorces, and many other negative impacts. That’s why, as per President Jokowi’s order when I took office as Minister of Kominfo, I said, ‘Eradicate online gambling!’ I responded, ‘Yes, Sir.’”

Furthermore, the Tech Minister also elaborated on President-elect Prabowo Subianto’s views regarding Indonesia’s four significant threats, which were discussed during a Cabinet Plenary Session in the new capital city of Nusantara on Friday (09/13).

“Mr. Prabowo highlighted four threats to Indonesia: illegal mining, narcotics, gambling, and data leaks. These four are significant obstacles, with economic losses amounting to tens of billions of US dollars. This truly weakens purchasing power, destroys the nation’s economic foundation, and poses a serious threat to realizing Indonesia’s Golden Vision 2045,” Budi concluded.
