Heaptalk, Jakarta — As a follow-up to the agreement between the Government and the Legislative Body of the Indonesian House of Representatives (DPR RI), the Bill on Amendments to Law No. 19/2006 on the Presidential Advisory Council (Dewan Pertimbangan Presiden, Wantimpres) has entered the discussion and decision-making stage (Level II) to be passed into law.
Minister of Administrative and Bureaucratic Reform (PANRB) Abdullah Azwar Anas stated that the Government fully understands and supports drafting the Presidential Advisory Council Bill in principle.
“The role of the Presidential Advisory Council is crucial as a source of independent and strategic views and advice. Therefore, this amendment is expected to strengthen the position of Wantimpres,” said Anas while delivering the Government’s final opinion at the 7th Plenary Session of the DPR RI for the First Session of the 2024-2025 Legislative Year, held at Nusantara II Building, DPR RI, Jakarta, on Thursday (09/19).
The bill was drafted to optimize the strategic function and role of the Presidential Advisory Council as an institution providing input and advice to the President. This strengthening also includes adjustments to the country’s new challenges, especially given government operations’ increasingly dynamic and complex nature.
The Presidential Advisory Council is expected to be a key partner in providing constructive and relevant recommendations. The advice should cover various strategic dimensions, including political, economic, social, legal, and security, to assist in formulating government policies. This aligns with the need for an advisory body offering multidimensional perspectives on the country’s various issues.
The recommendations provided by the Presidential Advisory Council will be based on in-depth studies and high-quality analysis, serving as a foundation for the President to make strategic decisions. Anas emphasized, “The Presidential Advisory Council is an institution capable of offering strategic recommendations.”
Furthermore, the government recognizes the importance of strengthening cross-sector coordination through the Presidential Advisory Council. It can be a solid partner in offering strategic insights that enhance coordination in economic, social, and political sectors. As a result, the policies produced will be relevant across sectors but integrative and sustainable.
“We believe that with the passing of this bill, we have taken a step forward in strengthening the Presidential Advisory Council to be more responsive and relevant in facing the current and future challenges,” Anas concluded.
