Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs (Komdigi) will issue regulations related to the embedded subscriber identity module (eSIM). Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid said that the regulation of this virtual SIM card will be officially launched within one to two weeks in February 2025.
“We will officially launch eSIM as a form of government modernization, especially Komdigi, to observe technological advancements in many other parts of the world. Therefore, SIM cards will later be in the form of eSIM, and we will issue the regulation,” said Meutya in a written statement in Jakarta on Friday (02/07).
Transitioning completely from physical SIM cards to virtual ones will take time. However, to get there, the government will first issue related regulations. She added, “It certainly takes time, a process until it happens, but we will issue it in about two weeks.”
This policy demonstrates the government’s efforts to tackle digital crimes, such as online fraud. According to the latest data from the Ministry of Communication and Digital Affairs, 314 million active SIM cards are currently in Indonesia.
“Later, the public might be affected, just like in 2019, when they had to update their data with mobile operators. Hence, there might be a little inconvenience, and we ask for support from the public representatives to secure data or prevent the community from digital world crimes,” she concluded.
