Heaptalk, Jakarta — Responding to several objections from diverse parties, including employers and workers, Chief of the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) Moeldoko stated that the government will continue implementing the Public Housing Savings (Tapera) program.
Moeldoko explained that Tapera is not a salary deduction but a savings scheme for workers to eventually own a home. People with a house can use Tapera as a savings vehicle, and the money deposited can be withdrawn after they retire.
“Ultimately, at retirement age, the savings can be withdrawn as fresh money along with the accumulated savings,” he said. Furthermore, Moeldoko also refuted claims that the Tapera program is intended to fund free meal programs and the development of the new capital city, Nusantara (IKN).
BP Tapera Commissioner Heru Pudyo Nugroho explained that public housing saving is a program designed to address the disparity in homeownership through cooperation between the government and the public. Through the current subsidized financing program, the government has only been able to facilitate around 250,000 homeownerships for the public. However, the demand for housing each year reaches 700,000 to 800,000 homes.
Therefore, all citizens are required to contribute to the Tapera fund to help everyone own a home. “So why should you save? It’s about the principle of mutual cooperation in the law, involving the government, people who own homes, and those who do not yet have homes, all blending together,” Heru concluded.
