Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Fakfak Regency Government, West Papua Province, plans to construct a large-scale ice plant in collaboration with a third party from BP Migas. La Mohdar, Acting Head of the Fisheries and Marine Affairs Department of Fakfak Regency Government, stated that the ice factory will be built in Ubadari Village, Kramomongga District.
Ubadari Village was chosen as the site due to its abundant water sources and central location within the regency. “If this ice factory project is accomplished, the ice produced can be supplied to multiple areas, including Goras Village, Teluk Arguni, Kokas, and even to the city of Fakfak,” La Mohdar said on Wednesday (08/07).
The ice plant is expected to meet the ice needs in the region, particularly for fishermen, thereby supporting the operational activities of the fisheries sector in Fakfak Regency. The proposal for the construction has been submitted to the West Papua Provincial Government in accordance with Law No. 23 of 2024. La Mohdar is optimistic that land issues can be resolved amicably, considering that a similar issue had previously been resolved at Siboru Airport.
La Mohdar also explained that the local government is carrying out several efforts to empower freshwater fish farmers, particularly in Bomberai and Tomage Districts. This initiative is part of a broader vision to make Fakfak a leading, prosperous, comfortable, excellent, and self-sufficient region.
“We continue to provide socialization and assistance to freshwater fish farmers in Bomberai and Tomage Districts,” he added. Despite budget constraints, support and socialization efforts persist to strengthen the freshwater fisheries sector.
According to him, Ubadari District holds major potential for the fisheries sector. However, he acknowledged that the slope of the terrain poses challenges for freshwater fish cultivation. Meanwhile, to support freshwater fish farming in Fakfak Regency, there is an opportunity to develop self-sufficient feed from local community groups.
