Heaptalk, Jakarta — The Fakfak Regency Government is attracting fishery investors to Karas District to achieve economic self-sufficiency for the community.
“Thank God, with the unwavering support of the Fakfak Regency Government and the Fisheries and Marine Department, we have secured an investor ready to cooperate with the government to purchase live fish catches from fishermen. This also supports the second policy and mission of the Fakfak Regency Government on economic self-sufficiency, especially in the fisheries and marine sector,” affirmed Fakfak Regent Untung Tamsil.
According to Untung, this step is a significant success, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, which caused the fishermen of Karas to lose their livelihoods for more than two years. He said, “Previously, the Karas community earned income from the Pulau Mas company, but during the pandemic, the company ceased operations. Now, in 2024, with government support, a company is ready to buy live grouper and other fish species.”
The company will operate in two locations in Karas District: Kiaba Village and Antalisa Village. It will also expand to Urat Village in East Fakfak District, Panjang Island, and Ugar Village in Kokas District, as well as Furwagi District.
Untung added, “This is one of the immediate efforts that must be made to improve the economy of coastal and island communities. Soon, we will also invite the Rajawali Laut Timur company to sign a Memorandum of Understanding or Cooperation Agreement.”
The types of fish to be collected and purchased are groupers, with prices adjusted based on the size and quality of the fish. “This is a prompt response and a quick effort to bring smiles back to the Karas community,” Untung concluded.
