After Years-Long Dispute, Meikarta Agrees to Compensate Consumers Rp26.8 Billion Following Government Mediation

Heaptalk, Jakarta – A wave of relief swept across the faces of Meikarta consumers as a long-standing dispute over the apartment complex in Cikarang, which has dragged on since 2018, finally reached a resolution. James Riady, CEO of Lippo Group, announced on April 23 that the company would provide full compensation to Meikarta buyers, amounting to Rp 26,855,558,439.

The decision was made following a meeting facilitated by the Minister of Housing and Settlement (PKP), Maruarar Sirait, between James Riady, his son John Riady, and 118 Meikarta consumers who had lodged complaints through the BENAR-PKP service (Integrated Housing Consumer Complaint System).

Minister Maruarar emphasized that this mediation demonstrated the government’s commitment to listening to public concerns. He also urged the Riady family to resolve the issue promptly, in accordance with President Prabowo Subianto’s directive.

“I am targeting a full resolution of the Meikarta case by July 23, 2025. The verification process of consumer data should be completed by May 2, 2025, so that we can determine the exact amount of compensation owed,” said Minister Maruarar.

In response, James Riady expressed his full support for the ministry’s efforts. He also praised Minister Maruarar’s commitment to advancing President Prabowo’s housing program, which is seen as a key driver for national economic growth.

“President Prabowo aims for an 8 percent economic growth rate, and housing development plays a central role in that vision,” said Riady, highlighting that each housing unit generates employment opportunities and supports local infrastructure.

Riady acknowledged the complexity of developing a new city and thanked consumers for their patience and support. He also noted that although Meikarta is managed by a public company, he is personally committed to ensuring a fair resolution for all parties involved.

According to Riady, around 16,000 housing units in Meikarta have already been completed and handed over. An additional 3,000 units are expected to be delivered this year.

Fitrah Nur, Director General of Settlement Areas at the Ministry of Housing, reported that since the launch of the BENAR-PKP complaint platform on March 26, 2025, 118 consumers have submitted grievances regarding Meikarta. Out of those, 102 have completed the required documentation, with a total claim value of Rp 26.8 billion.
