Heaptalk, Jakarta — The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) held the 29th National Technology Awakening Day (Hakteknas) commemoration at the Soekarno Science and Technology Area, Cibinong, West Java (08/09).
This year’s National Technology Awakening Day will be commemorated on August 10, 2024, in conjunction with the 2024 Indonesia Research and Innovation Expo. The 29th Hakteknas commemoration is a critical moment for the Indonesian nation to reflect on the progress, challenges, and future of science, technology, and innovation development in the country.
The theme ‘Research and Innovation for an Advanced Indonesia’ was chosen to emphasize the important role of innovation in strengthening the nation’s independence and enhancing Indonesia’s global competitiveness. The commemoration aims to showcase the research and innovation results implemented across various sectors and encourage synergy between academics, government, and industry to create a better research and innovation ecosystem.
National research spending reached Rp20.39 trillion
Laksana Tri Handoko, Head of BRIN, stated that the performance of research and innovation in Indonesia has shown significant progress, as evidenced by the increasing number of international scientific publications and patents. “This shows that Indonesian research is increasingly recognized globally and has the potential to impact society,” said Handoko.
According to 2023 data, national research spending reached Rp20.39 trillion, with the higher education sector contributing the most significant proportion at 46.02%. Meanwhile, the contribution from the business or industrial sector also showed a significant increase, reaching 21.56% of total research spending, up from 17% in the previous year. Handoko said, “This increase reflects the great potential of the industrial sector to contribute to innovation and technological development in Indonesia.”

He also noted that one important indicator of research and innovation success is the export of high-tech products, with export values still exceeding import values. This achievement reflects Indonesia’s ability to internalize science and technology into national production.
Additionally, intellectual property data is one form of output that can measure research and innovation performance at the individual, organizational, and national levels. Handoko added, “This year, a new indicator has been added: intellectual property royalties, which are rewards for using intellectual property and contributing to the economy through science and technology.”
Through this 29th Hakteknas commemoration, he invited all elements of society to play a more active role in developing research and innovation that has a tangible impact on the nation’s progress. Additionally, it is essential to strengthen the synergy between the government, academia, and industry in achieving national independence and competitiveness through innovation. “We must secure that research results do not solely end in publications but can also be implemented and provide tangible benefits for the economy and the welfare of society,” he concluded.
