Heaptalk, Jakarta — OpenAI, the parent company of ChatGPT, has launched SearchGPT. “Its function is similar to Google Search, which Google owns,” the company stated.
As a new player in the search engine service, OpenAI offers a distinguishing feature in the SearchGPT search engine. The search results on SearchGPT are designed to make users better understand what they are searching for, unlike regular search engines that only display a list of links.
Similar to Google Search, SearchGPT starts with a text box with the question, “What are you looking for?”. The size of the search engine box is significantly larger than Google’s. Through its official site, ChatGPT’s parent company also showcases example search results on SearchGPT. One example is when users search for the best time to see Nudibranch at Half Moon Bay, USA. Nudibranch, commonly known as Nudi, is a type of sea slug that does not have a shell.
“The keywords in this example also include the time ‘this week.’ Then, SearchGPT summarizes the ideal time for users to see Nudi. Two times are displayed, each starting with a pointer, making it quicker for users to understand,” explained ChatGPT’s parent company.
Although its function is similar to Google Search, SearchGPT has the advantage of including relevant location points to visit. Additionally, users can ask follow-up questions, as in ChatGPT. For instance, regarding Nudi, users ask, “Is (Half Moon Bay) hot?”. SearchGPT then displays a list of weather forecasts for the California bay. Based on the displayed example, there is still a text box under the weather forecast data. This means users can still ask follow-up questions to explore results further while staying relevant to the main topic.
Despite the announcement, it should be noted that SearchGPT is currently still a prototype and is being further developed by OpenAI. However, according to an OpenAI spokesperson, 10,000 selected users can test the capabilities of this search engine.
