Heaptalk, Jakarta — PT Bank Tabungan Negara Tbk (BTN) is reported to have experienced leakage trouble of its customer data. The hacked data covers account numbers, ID card numbers, and date of birth, and it is threatened with being sold for US$1,000, around Rp16.3 million.
Previously, on the BreachForum page, the owner of the NexusHaxor account admitted to having hacked BTN customer data totaling 370,000. In his statement, he said that his party had revealed the vulnerability of millions of Indonesian citizens’ personal information. Instead of fulfilling personal matters, NexusHaxor’s post showed that disclosing this data highlights the emergency requisites for reform in the country’s data security policy.
Responding to this issue, BTN Corporate Secretary Ramon Armando said the company had conducted an in-depth investigation. “We emphasized that the leak of customer data is completely inaccurate. Our customer data is currently safe and protected with an integrated protected IT system. We have also been informed that the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo) had blocked the site,” Ramon added, cited in Kontan.
Nevertheless, BTN will continue to take preventive steps to strengthen the information technology security system against potential data disruption by increasing system protection and resilience.
The significance of data security is a current-amplification priority amidst the high number of data leakage issues. After the National Data Center (PDN) was hit by Brain Cipher ransomware, a new bank account hacking application has emerged. This application reportedly can hack mobile banking, causing the money to disappear quickly.
Banking Analyst and Payment System Practitioner Arianto Muditomo explained that it is unlikely for such an application to directly hack m-banking due to the rigorous process involved in launching mobile banking applications. These processes include development, licensing, inspection, audits, and trials.
“BTN continues to protect customer data safely and follows applicable regulations, and the OJK always supervises it,” Ramon affirmed.
