Heaptalk, Jakarta – Ransomware named Brain Chiper crippled the National Data Center (PDN) on 20 June, 2024. The lockbit 3.0 Ransomware, as reported from the Ministry of Communication and Informatics (Kominfo), managed to encrypt the data of 210 government institutions, both from central and local government.
The hacker also blackmailed the government to pay US$8 million to restore the data, but the authority claimed to recover its own system by themselves which is expected to fully finish this July.
For the incident, four public services listed below were impacted, even some of them still face troubles until today.
Immigration services
The issue of ransomware attack revealed after the system of immigration services was down, causing a long queues at the airport. The crossing system reportedly recovered on June 22, while other services, including the autogate system, visa applications, residence permits, and m-password, started normally on June 23.
Education apps
As cited in The Education Ministry’s Instagram account on Friday (06/28), around 47 domains and apps managed by the Ministry cannot be accesssed. As the result, several services, spanning SPSE, Scholarship, KIP for university student, and online-offline registering service (LTMTD) by Zoom are under maintenance.
E-KTP (e-ID)
Lockbit 3.0 attack also impacted e-KTP system as it forced e-KTP replacement system to stop running. The trouble in residence administration process caused other problems as ID card is a legal requirement to access most services in the country, such as opening bank account, opening health insurance, and more.
BPJS Kesehatan (Social Security Agency on Health)
After the issue of lockbit 3.0 shocked the country, the services of BPJS Kesehatan reportedly down, particularly in the claiming process and online registration process.
