The Kearney firm party suggests the government should boost educational infrastructure to reach matured human resources of the digital ecosystem.
Heaptalk, Jakarta — Indonesia’s digital economy has the most significant value in Southeast Asia, with a 22% increase, estimated at around US$77 billion in 2022. However, according to the study of Kearney, the widening digital equality gap remains a challenge for the country due to this gap affecting its goal to achieve Indonesia’s vision in 2045.
According to the Managing Director of Kearney Indonesia, Shirley Santoso, the archipelago has good demographic bonus potential in the coming year. For this reason, according to her, the country is suggested to overcome the structural issues in education and human resource development related to digital literacy as the digitalization initiative remains limited, impacting the productivity of human resources to adjust to the grow-fasting digital ecosystem worldwide.
Shirley added, “Indonesia accounts for 40% of Southeast Asia’s digital economy. However, most people in several regions still lack basic information and communication technology skills to adjust to today’s technology-oriented environment,”
A similar report also reveals society spends their time surfing on the internet for 9 hours, with 87% of internet users making transactions on the internet and 77% making these transactions in e-commerce platforms. In terms of this amount, Kearney’s Managing Director considered this behavior to be forecasted to open up immense potential, expecting to achieve double-digit growth in Indonesia’s digital economy.
Shirley claimed this enhancement would continue to increase as the development of e-commerce has not only occurred in tier-one cities but has also penetrated tier 2 and 3 cities throughout Indonesia. For this reason, she expects the country can take this moment to originate its human resources to be more productive by strengthening the fundamentals of the digital ecosystem.
Moreover, based on the analyst study of 228 million recent job advertisements in the United States, the results show that Artificial Intelligence (AI)/ Machine Learning (ML), Cloud Computing, Product Management, and Social Media skills lead to the four skills most in demand for this evolving working environment.
To reach human resources with more matured technological capabilities, the Principal of Kearney, Rohit Sethi, affirmed that the state must immediately develop educational infrastructure with a robust digital ecosystem by involving the central government, private companies, States Owned Enterprises (SOEs), and technology practitioners in the education sector. Rohit looks forward that government expenses can be reduced by arranging the funding regulations to attract the industry, as sufficient funding can back the development of a digital-based education ecosystem.
